Happy New Year!



I can hardly believe it's the end of the year already!  It seems 2010 has gone by so fast!
My son turned 13 this year, we learned to ride a horse, raised some more chickens, I learned to make soap, lost a relationship that was very dear to me, learned that there is peace and grace in suffering, was reminded that God still answers prayers, learned that sometimes you lose things you dearly wanted to hold to, and that God can bless you with things unexpectedly that can change your life.  We went on our first cruise this year.  It was great. Learned that true friends are a blessing. It was a year of health issues, but was blessed with less issues with my Myasthenia Gravis.

I am blessed to have a wonderfully patient husband who loves me dearly.  Blessed to be married to him for 14 years.  God has really changed his heart this year and it's been an awesome thing to be a part of...

I am blessed to have a great teenage son. :)  I'm learning so much raising a teenager. ;)  He has a heart for the underdog and loves technology.  Excited to see what God is going to do with his life...

I am looking forward to what God is going to do this year.  Only He knows the outcome...whatever He brings to us this year, I pray I will handle it in a God honoring way that He would be pleased with...

What a day...

I guess it could be worse...it's just been a crazy week.

Yesterday started with a doctor's appointment to see what to do about my lungs.  I go in for Pulmonary Function Tests on Monday to see what the cause is of my shortness of breath...is it my Myasthenia Gravis causing it or COPD that keeps showing up on my chest x-rays...only God knows.

Today I had another doctor's appointment to see how I am healing after my hysterectomy...I'm sad to say that I am not all healed. :(  I had to switch doctors because the doctor who did my surgery got fired.  They said she was mentally unstable.  Great.  After speaking with this new doctor, it seems Carcinoma In Situ is not cancer after all. (Was told by two doctors that it was) They categorize it as very severe dysplasia.  She said my hysterectomy was unnecessary and that the doctor didn't have to do it.  Great.  It was done under that doctors high recommendation to have it done.  My new doc did say what's done is done and now I don't have to worry about cancer there at all.  True.  But, what a mess...

I think I need another vacation....;)

Herb talk---Feverfew

Overview:

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium ), a member of the sunflower family, has been used for centuries in European folk medicine as a remedy for headaches, arthritis, and fevers. The term feverfew is adapted from the Latin word febrifugia or "fever reducer."
Feverfew is also used to treat menstrual irregularities, labor difficulties, skin conditions, stomach aches, and asthma.

Plant Description:

Native to southeastern Europe, feverfew is now widespread throughout Europe, North America, and Australia. Feverfew is a short perennial that blooms between July and October, and gives off a strong and bitter odor. Its yellow-green leaves are alternate (the leaves grow on both sides of the stem at alternating levels), and turn downward with short hairs. The small, daisy-like yellow flowers are arranged in a dense flat-topped cluster.

What's It Made Of?:

Feverfew products usually consist of dried feverfew leaves, but all parts of the plant that grow above ground may also be used for medicinal purposes. The migraine-relieving activity of feverfew is believed to be due to parthenolide, an active compound that helps relieve smooth muscle spasms. In particular, it helps prevent the constriction of blood vessels in the brain (one of the leading causes of migraine headaches). Parthenolide also inhibits the actions of compounds that cause inflammation and may inhibit cancer cell growth.

Medicinal Uses and Indications:

Health care providers primarily use feverfew to treat and prevent certain headaches, arthritis, and other painful disorders.

Migraine Headaches
Feverfew gained popularity in Great Britain in the 1980s as an alternative to conventional medications for migraine headaches. A survey of 270 migraine sufferers in Great Britain revealed that more than 70% of individuals felt substantially better after ingesting an average of 2 - 3 fresh feverfew leaves daily. Several controlled human trials have been conducted using feverfew for migraine prevention and treatment. Overall, these studies suggest that feverfew taken daily as dried leaf capsules may reduce the incidence of attacks in patients who experience long-term migraine headaches.
  • A clinical study used a combination of feverfew with Salix alba (white willow). White willow contains components similar to aspirin. The product was given twice daily for 12 weeks. The frequency of migraine attacks and the pain intensity and duration were significantly reduced in patients taking the combination.
  • Another study found that a carbon dioxide extract of feverfew decreased the frequency of migraine attacks from 4.76 per month to 1.9 per month. A 3 month study in 49 subjects found that a combination of feverfew with magnesium and vitamin B2 provided a 50% decrease in migraine attacks.
  • Some studies in humans have not been positive. Whether feverfew helps improve migraine pain depends on which feverfew supplement you take. Talk to your health care provider.
Arthritis
Although many laboratory tests and case reports demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties of feverfew, a human study concluded that feverfew was no more effective than placebo in improving symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Until further studies are conducted, it appears that the safety and effectiveness of feverfew in people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis has yet to be scientifically proven.

Available Forms:

Feverfew supplements are available fresh, freeze-dried, or dried and can be purchased in capsule, tablet, or liquid extract forms. Feverfew supplements with clinical studies contain a standardized dose of parthenolide (the active compound in feverfew). Feverfew supplements should be standardized to contain at least 0.2% parthenolide.

How to Take It:

Pediatric
Feverfew should not be used in children under 2 years of age.
In older children, adjust the recommended adult dose to account for the child's weight. Most herbal dosages for adults are calculated on the basis of an average of 150 lb (70 kg) adult. Therefore, if the child weighs 50 lb (20 - 25 kg), the appropriate dose of feverfew for this child would be 1/3 of the adult dosage.
Adult
For migraine headaches: Take 100 - 300 mg, up to 4 times daily, standardized to contain 0.2 - 0.4% parthenolides. Feverfew may be used to prevent or stop a migraine headache. Feverfew supplements may also be carbon dioxide extracted. For these, take 6.25 mg, 3 times daily, for up to 16 weeks.
For inflammatory conditions (such as arthritis): 120 - 60 drops, 2 times daily of a 1:1 w/v fluid extract, or 60 - 120 drops 2 times daily of 1:5 w/v tincture.

Precautions:

Side effects from feverfew can include abdominal pain, indigestion, flatulence, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and nervousness. Mouth ulcers, loss of taste, and swelling of the lips, tongue, and mouth may occur in some individuals who chew raw feverfew leaves. Rarely, allergic reactions to feverfew have also been reported. In fact, people with allergies to chamomile, ragweed, or yarrow will likely be allergic to feverfew and, therefore, should not take it.
Feverfew may increase the tendency to bleed, especially in individuals who have bleeding disorders or take blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or warfarin. Do not use feverfew if you have bleeding disorders or are taking blood-thinning medications unless you are under the supervision of a doctor. Storage of the prepared extract is also important. At normal temperatures, some constituents in feverfew can degrade from capsules.
Pregnant and nursing women as well as children under 2 years of age should not take feverfew.
Do not abruptly stop taking feverfew if you have used it for more than 1 week. A withdrawal syndrome characterized by rebound headache, anxiety, fatigue, muscle stiffness, and joint pain may occur.

Possible Interactions:

Feverfew may alter the effects of some prescription and nonprescription medications. If you are currently being treated with any of the following medications, you should not use feverfew without first talking to your health care provider.
Blood-thinning medications -- Feverfew may inhibit the activity of platelets (a substance that plays a role in blood clotting), so individuals taking blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin and warfarin) should consult a health care provider before taking this herb.

Shining is always costly...


Shining is always costly.  Light comes only at the cost of that which produces it.  An unlit candle does no shining.  Burning must come before shining.  We cannot be of great use to others without cost to ourselves.  Burning suggest suffering.  We shrink from pain.

We are apt to feel that we are doing the greatest good in the world when we are strong, able for active duty, and when the heart and hands are full of kindly service.

When we are called aside and can only suffer; when we are sick; when we are consumed with pain; when all our activities have been dropped, we feel that we are no longer of use...that we are not doing anything.

BUT, if we are patient and submissive, it is almost certain that we are a greater blessing to the world in our time of suffering and pain than we were in the days when we thought we were doing the most of our work.  We are burning now, and shining, because we are burning.

Remember Lot's wife!



What kind of wife do we want to be?  One who is submissive and encouraging to her husband or one who is disobedient and tears him down?

There are several examples God gives us in the bible of women who were not submissive.  First, Lot's wife was not obedient.  Her husband tried to protect her and take her out of the city, but she would not submit to the Lord and listen to His direction to not look back.  It cost her her life....Remember Lot's wife...

There is Michal, David's wife, who made fun of him for dancing/celebrating before the Lord and she despised him in her heart.  She discouraged him.  She had no children to the day of her death. 2 Samuel 6:16-23

There is Jezebel who killed the Lord's prophets.  She was Ahab's wife and was a very demanding one. 1 Kings 21:25  She was very haughty.

Then there is Vashti who was also disobedient and her royal position was taken from her and given to Esther.

We are not to be like these women.  We are to be God honoring, submissive to our husband and to the Lord.  We are blessed when we are.  I can love my husband in his weakness and I can understand him in his weakness.  I can encourage him to be the man God has created him to be.  I can encourage him to want to be the husband and leader he was meant to be...or I can destroy him with my actions and words.  I can tear him down and cause him to flee from his responsibility as a husband.  Is your husband present?  Is he drowning himself in work?  Is he there emotionally?  Or is he ever present leading your family as God would have him to be.  When he is at work, is his mind on home?  Does he find ways to bless you because he can't help but want to for you are being a wife he desires?

A woman needs to have a submissive spirit that will bless her husband's vision.  Wives, we have a mission.  That is to bless our husband, show him love, encourage him, make him feel like the man that he is, and let him know that we follow him as our spiritual head here on earth.  Our actions need to reflect this...Do it and see the amazing things God is going to do in both your lives. :)

Merry Christmas!


Stopping in today to say Merry Christmas!  We will probably be busy tomorrow to post. :)  We start off the morning with scripture then cinnamon rolls. :)  The rest of the day is spent as family time just enjoying the peace and awe of the day.

I want to say Merry Christmas to those I cannot verbally wish a Merry Christmas to.  I pray your Christmas this year is as wonderful as the others.  This year is different for us, but the base is the same...Jesus.

Enjoy eating all the goodies that were made for you. :)  I know I will. :)  I love that part of Christmas...

Christmas Glow

Tonight is Christmas Eve. The stores and banks will close early. Families will be gathered at home, or visiting one another. There will be church services tonight and everyone will be pondering the birth of Christ and enjoying the Passages from the book of Luke. It is a heartwarming time of year.

Yet, in some homes, there are financial woes. When these mothers think of Christmas, they despair at the idea of coming up with money for presents. They pray and cry out and wish they could afford gifts for their children. Perhaps the heating bill was too high this month? Or the car was acting up? Maybe the cost of basic food is getting to be impossible to manage. Regardless of the source of their worries, these mothers cannot imagine Christmas morning without some sadness.  They hear others say their shopping is done and the presents are wrapped, and they weep in their hearts, because they have not.

We must remember that many years ago, this mass idea of multitudes of presents was not the normal custom. Remember Laura and Mary Ingalls? They received an orange, some Christmas candy, a knitted scarf and a Christmas penny. They were thrilled and delighted!

Alas, we want to buy our children nice things. We love them dearly and enjoy seeing their happy, surprised faces when they open gifts! We have to be ever so careful to come up with the money and choose just the right items. The depression-era mothers would spend months filling up their money jar, scrimping and saving so they could buy a special gift for each child. It was an enormous sacrifice, but one these mothers would willingly make.

I remember, years ago, when I only had two little girls. I stayed up late each night, all week long, before Christmas and sewed matching dresses for my children.  I used a dark calico print with pretty pink hearts all over it. I trimmed the dresses with lace and made matching hair ribbons. My girls were so surprised and wore them to church on Christmas morning. It was such a sacrifice for me, but worth every moment!

In these hard times, Mothers of today must have courage. We walk into our kitchens and wonder what we are going to feed the family. We have to smile and pray and come up with creative ways to make nutritious, filling meals. We need to keep the thought of hardship, suffering, and want out of our homes. Our children need to feel secure. We must be brave and inventive! We have to avoid giving- in to depression or sorrow.

We Mothers in this generation are facing hard economic times. I pray these Mothers have Christmas courage. It is a special kind of courage and will carry us through for months to come!

Catching up...

I have been trying to catch up on laundry ever since we returned from our vacation...I'm not getting very far. :) I am catching up on baking during this season which seems so much shorter this year.  I've been exhausted and asked Hunter if I could only make one cookie this year what kind would it be.  He said, Oatmeal Creme pies.  So I made those for him today.  I will be making more peanut butter balls tomorrow and that will be all I'll be doing this year.  Next week I have to make more peanut butter balls and pumpkin fudge for the captains side of the family.

I've been pretty tuckered out lately.  I go in to see the doc next week about a finding on my chest x-ray that I had during my surgery physical.  Does it ever end?  To be quite frank with you all, I'm getting sick of having health issues.  Now it's focused on my lungs.  There is a possibility that I could have COPD.  I will need to have my lung function worked up to see what the problem is. I am quite short of breath a lot, mostly in the mornings.  I feel like I can't exhale all my air out.  I've had shortness of breath before quite often, but everyone just thought it was due to my Myasthenia Gravis.  I really pray there is no COPD as it is quite scary to have.  I also have been having some heart issues and will need to get that checked.  They could be related. :(  Makes you long for glory some days...

Even with all this going on, I have still been working on contentment.  I feel pretty good spiritually even though physically I don't.  I realize God is in control and He holds me in the palm of His hand.  He is not blind to what is going on with me.  He knows.  I pray that He can give the doctors wisdom as to what is going on and I can feel better once and for all.  On a side note, I do feel better in the area of my surgery.  I am thankful that pain is gone. :)

I hope everyone is enjoying this season.  It is a blessed time of year.  It is a comforting time of year for me.  I enjoy the glow of the lights on the tree at night, the comfort of the woodstove, the coziness of the couch when we all sit together, the smell of goodies baking...and focusing on the true reason for this season, Jesus.

To finish catching up, last night I had a dream.  I dreamed God was telling our family to read Genesis to prepare us for something.  He said what it would prepare us for, but for the life of me I cannot remember what it was.  I just remember we were supposed to read Genesis.  So we will...

He continues to make His presence known...

An amazing chocolate buffet.  There were so many different kinds of chocolate it was insane.  I had the chocolate mousse and it was divine!


And there was a sushi bar...yuck.  But, my husband loved it.

I didn't really take a lot of dinner pictures.  I wish I had.  I had an amazing flourless molten cake and it was THE best one ever. (wish I got a pic)  Most nights I forgot to take my camera to dinner with me.  The food was really good.  There was a cucumber soup I didn't care for and a cherry vanilla ice cream that was just ok.  We had lamb, lobster tail, free range spring chicken, shrimp, salmon, basa, mussels, prime rib, and more.  I had creme brulee, molten cake, tiramisu, and mousse for dessert. For lunch I had mushroom alfredo with gluten free noodles every day.  What can I say, I missed pasta. :)  The food experience was awesome.  My second favorite thing to the trip...the first being the moonlight kayaking in Puerto Rico. :)

A December to remember...

Wow! What a vacation that was! No phone...no internet...no responsibilities...Just fun, food, and relaxing!

We went on a cruise to the Caribbean.  Our stops were Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten.  We had a great time.

The first two days our ship hit rough water so it rocked and rolled quite a bit.  There were several people that got sick including our friend, Jenny.  It was difficult to walk as you would stumble around due to the waves rolling the ship.  I over heard several people say that they never had a cruise that was that rocky.  Usually you can't even tell you are on a ship.  After day two it settled down and we got off in Puerto Rico. This was a night excursion.  We took a van ride for 1 1/2 hours to get to where we needed to go.  Before we left I had some, what I thought was decaf coffee.  Turns our it wasn't and I had to pee (sorry) really bad on the way.  We were only 20 minutes into it and I thought I'd die.  Ryan had to ask the driver to stop for me so I could go.  It was really embarrassing. But, it made a memory for us all. LOL. Once we got to where we were going, we went kayaking through some mangroves in the dark.  It was so awesome.  There were bio-luminescent organisms in the water and whenever you put your paddle in the water or swished your hand through it, it would glow in the dark!  I couldn't get any pics because we were all getting wet in the kayak.

The next two stops were St. Thomas and St. Maarten.  We went to Magen's Bay to swim in St. Thomas.  It was rated one of the top 10 beaches by National Geographic.  It was beautiful.  Ryan found a star fish that was alive there in the water along with several pretty shells and coral.  We went shopping in St. Maarten and ate lunch there.  We stayed on the Dutch side as the French side had nude beaches. LOL.  Didn't quite want to see that! ;)  It was a great time and we enjoyed going with our friends.  It was fun and relaxing all at the same time.

See ya when I get back...

Going to be gone for 7 days and will be without internet.  Gonna focus on my husband and God and just plain enjoy myself.  :) It's been a bit of a rough year and it will be nice to shed some stress.  God has surely blessed me this year with the healing of cancer and leading me to new things.

It's almost that time...

We are leaving Friday for our cruise and I'm getting excited. :)  I'm looking forward to focusing on my husband for 7 days. :)  I'm also looking forward to warm weather and having fun with two of our friends.  I hope it doesn't go by so fast.  I want to savor every moment. :)  I am working on living in the moment...what a way to apply it. :)

I need to clean the chicken coop out tomorrow so it will be nice and clean while we are gone and they are "cooped" up for a while.  It is supposed to be bitter cold here while we are gone, so them being "cooped" up will be good for them.  They will be warmer that way.  My egg production has dropped drastically.  This cold weather doesn't quite agree with them.

I hope to be a witness to others on this cruise.  I'd like to shine His light and be noted as one of His without even saying a word. Why?

Love your husband...




What things are drawing your heart away from loving your husband?

I mean REALLY loving your husband?

We can be so distracted by the meaningless. Thinking that these things matter but they really don't.

I was created to be my husband's helpmeet, but I need to constantly examine how I am doing in this area.

I need to look at my life through his eyes to see how I am doing.

I want to live a quiet life.

A simple life

and be busy with my hands.

And be busy with that which pleases the Lord.

I want to use my hands to build a home.

I want younger women to know that we can do many good things, many meaningful things--but we must do the FIRST things that God has called us to and that is to be a helpmeet and to love respect our husbands. It is so easy to get off track, myself included. The homeschooling, the children, the house, the list can be endless while our husbands quietly take a back seat out of love for us.
I want to bring him good and not harm all the days of his life.

Herb talk---Oregano



This is another one of my favorite herbs.  We use this herb when any of us get bronchitis or upper respiratory infections.  This is our "antibiotic."


Oregano is an aromatic herb that belongs to the mint family, it can grow to about two feet in height. It is native to the Mediterranean region but is cultivated worldwide. The leaves as well as the volatile oil of oregano are used medicinally, but must be carefully distinguished as they are quite different. There is a common oregano that is use for cooking and the oregano that is use to make oil. Origanum Marjoram is the common oregano used for cooking. Origanum Vulgare is the wild oregano used for making oil.Oil of Oregano is a highly potent purifier that provides many benefits for human health. The two important compounds that are responsible for the many health benefits of oregano are carvacrol and thymol. Studies have shown that both of these compounds can inhibit the growth of bacteria, virus and fungi which is the main causes of many illnesses in humans. Oregano oil is marketed in either liquid or capsules/ tablets forms.

Health Benefits of Oregano Oil:
  • It strong antiviral and antibacterial properties can help destroy organisms that contribute to skin infections.
  • It also has antiparisitic properties which is helpful in digestive problems
  • It can strengthen the immune system
  • It helps increase the joint and muscles flexibility
  • Improves respiratory health.
  • Oil of Oregano when applied topically can help treat skin infections, itchy skin and irritated gums, (but make sure it has been diluted because oregano oil is concentrated and can cause burning sensation to tongue or skin).
  • The high content of thymol and carvacrol in oregano can help calm upset stomachs and aid digestion. Mix 2 to 3 drops of oil to a glass of juice, milk or water for a quick remedy for mild indigestion.
  • Oil of Oregano can help in the treatment of sinus or lung congestion. Just mix 2 or 3 drops of oil with juice, and drink this daily, you can notice the improvement within 3-5days. (We use capsules from Gaia herbs)
  • Oregano has antioxidant properties. Studies have shown that the anti-oxidant properties of oregano may even exceed that of apples and blueberries. Antioxidant vitamins are thought to play a vital role in the prevention of many forms of cancer, as well as perhaps slowing down the aging process.
  • Oregano is rich in fiber
  • Fresh oregano like other leafy vegetables is loaded with vitamins and nutrients. It is a good source of iron and manganese as well as calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin A. It also has omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Oregano is good in maintaining the respiratory health
  • Oregano oil, also acts as a stimulant, carminative, and it helps to increase perspiration when a person has fever.
  • Oregano can help increase menstrual flow.
  • When given in the form of a warm infusion, oregano relieves muscle spasms and cramps, colic, or spasmodic pains in the abdomen.
  • The dried leaves can also be applied in bags as a warm application to painful arthritic swellings and other conditions, including rheumatism. 
Caution:
  • Oregano oil may reduce the body's ability to absorb iron. Therefore pregnant women are advised not to take Oil of Oregano regularly.
  • If you are allergic to thyme, basil, mint, or sage you may also experience sensitivity to oregano oil since they all came from the same plant family.
  • Be careful when taking oregano oil internally because its highly concentrated form may cause harm to the internal organ.
  • Volatile oils are generally considered contraindicated in pregnancy as they likely reach the baby and may cause harm.
  • Topically, the volatile oil of oregano may be moderately irritating to skin and can be a potent mucous membrane irritant. Therefore it should not be applied topically to mucous membranes in greater than a 1% concentration. Children less than two years of age and people with damaged or very sensitive skin should not use the oil topically.

    Baby it's cold outside!



    It finally snowed some here, but not much.  Winter seems to have finally come even though it's not official.  It's COLD.  My chickens have been doing fine except for the fact they have drastically reduced there laying.  I think I get 3 to 4 eggs a day right now from 18 chickens.  They do this every winter. 

    I am thankful for our woodstove that keeps our house nice and toasty.  It feels good on early mornings when I wake up before everyone to do my herbal lessons online.  It helps me relax.  It becomes a stove to cook on when the power goes out.  It has all kinds of purposes. :)

    This cold weather has me excited for our upcoming cruise.  My husband and I are going with another couple to the Caribbean.   I've never been, so this ought to be interesting. :)  I'm looking forward to relaxing and spending time with my husband and friends.  We are celebrating our anniversary, Christmas, birthday, and being cancer free. :)  One of our excursions is moonlit kayaking.

    I pray you all are staying warm and enjoying this season. :)  It can be a still time of year that you can take advantage of God's speaking.  It's sometimes easier to listen when we are still.

    Ginger is well known as a remedy for travel sickness, nausea and indigestion and is used for wind, colic, irritable bowel, loss of appetite, chills, cold, flu, poor circulation, menstrual cramps, dyspepsia (bloating, heartburn, flatulence), indigestion and gastrointestinal problems such as gas and stomach cramps. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb and there has been much recent interest in its use for joint problems. It has also been indicated for arthritis, fevers, headaches, toothaches, coughs, bronchitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, to ease tendinitis, lower cholesterol and blood-pressure and aid in preventing internal blood clots.

    Ginger has been well researched and many of its traditional uses confirmed. It is well known as a remedy for travel sickness, nausea and indigestion. It is a warming remedy, ideal for boosting the circulation, lowering high blood pressure and keeping the blood thin in higher doses. Ginger is anti-viral and makes a warming cold and flu remedy. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb and there has been much recent interest in its use for joint problems.

    Ginger root is a medicinal herb used primarily for the treatment of Dyspepsia (discomfort after eating), this includes the symptoms of bloating, heartburn, flatulence, and nausea. It is also considered helpful as a preventative for motion sickness and as a digestive. Due to it's antispasmodic characteristic some people have used it to help ease menstrual cramps. In some traditional systems it is credited with the ability to treat arthritis, fevers, headaches, and toothaches.

    Ginger may also be taken orally as a herbal remedy to prevent or relieve nausea resulting from chemotherapy, motion sickness, pregnancy, and surgery.

    Results of laboratory studies as well as from small studies conducted among seasick sailors or ship passengers, found that ginger generally has more effectiveness for relieving motion sickness than placebo (or sugar pills). Several comparisons between ginger and prescription or non-prescription drugs have been conducted for relieving the nausea of pregnancy, but results are inconclusive.

    Results of limited studies in animals with diabetes show that ginger may reduce blood levels of sugar and cholesterol, while also lowering blood pressure. However, no human studies with similar results have been reported. A few small studies that have been conducted in humans have shown some promise for supplemental ginger in the treatment of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

    If a person has exercised too much or suffers from arthritis or rheumatism, ginger has been known to ease inflammation of the joints and muscle tissue. Due to its tremendous circulation-increasing qualities, ginger is thought to improve the complexion. It has reduced nervousness, eased tendinitis, and helped sore throats return to normal. Studies demonstrate that ginger can lower cholesterol levels by reducing cholesterol absorption in the blood and liver. It may also aid in preventing internal blood clots.

    **New Research! **- Ginger root was recently the subject of a startling new research report presented at The American Association for Cancer research conference in Phoenix. In the study, ginger actually suppressed cancer cells suggesting that the herb was able to fuel apoptosis or the death of the cancer cells. Ginger has been shown to work against skin, ovarian, colon and breast cancer. But it had not been shown to halt the progression of cancer until now. However, more research is required to confirm this.

    I recently made some hard candy with ginger in it for a trip.  My friend gets car sick so I made this for her.  It was tasty and helped. :)

    Remembering...



    This is a wonderful time of year...I love "hibernating" at home by the woodstove and relaxing with the captain and Hunter.  We recently decorated the house and tree and couldn't help but be reminded of this time last year.  Hunter talked about "dad" today and how they came over and celebrated Christmas with us with a meal and we used our good china.  It was a good time...Made a good memory.  But, there is an ache behind that memory.  Not being able to celebrate this year with them and not being able to see him and wish him Merry Christmas. I sure miss him.  I hope he is well...

    It will take me years to shake the ache in my heart during this time of year.  But, even so, I am content with remembering the good that God allowed during this season last year. It's amazing how quickly a bond can form as if it was always there.  When it's broken, it's hurts all the more.

    I will continue to grow in Him and learn from all the experiences in my life.  God is good and I trust Him.  That allows me to be a little more at peace with my circumstances.  He is the One who has brought about my circumstances. :)

    Gluten free buckeyes/peanut butter balls...



    I always loved peanut butter balls or buckeyes. :)  But, they were made with graham crackers and with having Celiac, I couldn't eat those.  So I made up this recipe and let me tell you, Celiac or not, these are wonderful!  I suggest you give them a try...they are very easy.

    Buckeyes/Peanut butter balls

    1 package Arrowroot cookies from Midel (ground up in food processor)
    1 jar crunchy peanut butter
    2 c powdered sugar
    1/3 c melted butter

    2 bags chocolate chips (semi-sweet)

    Mix all ingredients except chocolate until well mixed (I mix with my hands :)  Roll into small balls and refrigerate until firm.  Melt chocolate chips. I use a glass bowl over a pot of simmering water.  Dip balls into chocolate using a toothpick.  Refrigerate. :)

    Wandering...

    Have you ever felt like you were wandering in the desert?  I can honestly say that I feel like I have been wandering for some time.  Almost as if I were sleep walking.  I have packed so much information in my head on how to be a good wife, mother, and Christian woman.  But, it seems as if I have been wandering in the desert with the information.  I feel like God is waking me up and telling me it's time to really, truly apply all I have learned and that it is time to stop wandering.

    Let me tell you...it's overwhelming.  It's very difficult to truly apply certain godly principles in your life.  The main one for me (as most of you already know) is contentment.  My husband has noticed that I am very hard on myself.  I am very discontent with myself a lot of the time.  Even tonight, I was very discouraged to discover I forgot the mozzarella for tonights pizza.  All we have is cheddar.  I became disappointed in myself that I wasn't more careful to remember the cheese at the store. That is just one example of my discontentment with myself. My husband has taken me aside and really had a deep conversation with me about truth.  It helped a lot.  But, it won't go very far unless I apply.  Oh how I need encouragement to keep on keepin' on in the application department.  I will try and apply something and do well, but then I slip and complain about something or become  upset with myself about something.  I put a lot of pressure on myself and in turn my family.

    So I am on the road to application and following the trail out of the desert.  I am thankful for my high school sweetheart who truly loves me.  He is guiding me proper and is being gentle and sincere about it.  I am very blessed with such a man.  I am going to listen and take his advice in certain matters knowing he has my best interest at heart....to become a content, happy, virtuous woman.

    If you see me on the trail heading out of the desert and I look weary, throw me a bottle of water...it may be a long walk...

    Gluten Free "Poptarts"


    These turned out pretty good. :)  I got the recipe from the internet and wanted to share.  They were not hard to make at all.

    Pastry:
    1 bag (3-1/2 cups) Pamela's Gluten-Free Bread Mix discard the yeast packet
    1 stick butter
    1/2 c shortening
    ¼ cup ice cold water
    Jam or jelly for filling pastries
    Topping (optional):
    1 egg
    1 tsp water
    Sugar to taste - large crystal sugar is fun


    Cut the butter and shortening into the Pamela's Gluten-Free Bread Mix until well incorporated. Pea-sized pieces of butter and flour should remain.Use the paddle attachment on a heavy duty stand mixer and blend for about 1 minute. Pour ¼ cup ice cold water into mixture and mix completely.
    Roll out dough between parchment paper. Cut dough into pieces about 4-½ inches tall by 7-inches wide (you will be folding this over to create a 4-½ inch tall by 3-½ inch wide tart). Roll dough to about 2/8 or 3/8-inch thick.
    Pastry
    Place jam in the center of the dough, use a finger with water to run around the edges so that the dough will stick together, fold over and crimp the edges with a fork.

    To make your pastry shiny, use an egg wash. Take one egg (or egg white) and mix with 1 tsp water. Whip with a fork. Brush on the top of the dough of your completed tart before baking. Sprinkle with sugar or large sugar crystals before placing in the oven.
    If preferred, bypass the egg wash, bake as instructed, let cool then glaze
    Bake at 350° for about 20 to 25 minutes. Edges should start to brown.
    Try all different kinds of fillings. Most pie fillings will work great.
